ASSIST IoT – OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY MONITORING AND INTERVENTIONS FOR HEALTH

Detailed description of project

The project focuses in delivering an intervention based mobile platform for human workers in the construction industry, to monitor their level of attention, fatigue and possible distractions, thus preventing potential hazardous situations that can provoke injuries. The main objective of SMART SONIA is to uninstructively detect and predict the quality of health of the workers while at the construction field and notify the OSH manager about their ability to work without possible injuries. To meet this objective, the project will use IoT for health quality indicators for workers, to collect vital health measurements, including those related with fatigue and distraction recognition. Biga data analysis will be applied for a beta testing pilot study period, to determine the thresholds for occupational hazardous levels, according to the specific working procedures they perform on site. If indicators reach alarming levels, then a first level of validation will be performed through questions and/or visuals that will be shown to the worker through his smartphone device. According to the answers collected, then intervention guidelines will be automatically sent to the worker, ex. 5 minutes break, or the need to sit down, etc. Intervention guidelines and response actions will be monitored real time from OSH manager who will then decide any further actions. All data collected, questionnaire answers as well as intervention suggestions and responses will be stored in a central data infrastructure. These will provide input for deriving a predictive model for work procedures and the evolution of health factors of workers in time.

Type and scope of work provided

SMART SONIA will provide a set of tools and a platform to evaluate the risks of workers at construction sites in a holistic way, which means understanding (in real time): a) their key health indicators, b) the risk level of the activity they are about to perform, c) the climate conditions while they work (or the side effects of extreme climate events aftermath). SMART SONIA will provide a real time platform to tackle risks as they evolve, so as to protect the workers.
